Meet the Staff
Rev. Nevergall is a native of St. Mary's a small city in west-central Ohio. He is a 1978 graduate of Ohio Northern University with a degree in Music. It was during his years in college that he was introduced to the Lutheran tradition, and where he first worshipped regularly in a Lutheran congregation, serving as choir director at St. John Lutheran Church near Dola, Ohio.
Prior to entering the seminary in 1990, Rev. Nevergall worked in advertising and marketing communications. Although he began his career as a writer, he moved very quickly to the account management and strategy side of the business, working with clients as diverse as Columbia Gas, Eastman Kodak, Remington Arms, and Dupont Carpet Fibers. He spent the last sx years in this first career focused primarily on new market and new product development.
The unexpected death of a young neighbor, however, gave new urgency to the call to ministry. So, one year later, Rv. Nevergall, his wife, Karen, and their two young sons packed up and moved to Columbus, Ohio where he enrolled in Trinity Lutheran Seminary. Rev. Nevergall did his Context work at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, a synod redevelopment site near the Victorian Village area of Columbus. He did his clinical pastoral education at the ohio State University Medical Cetner and was hired as a chaplain for the Dodd Hall Rehabilitation Hospital. Rev. Nevergall served his internship in three small congregations in southern Marion County.
In the spring of 1994, Rev. Nevergall was assigned to the Northwestern Ohio Synod - ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church of America), and after seminary graduation was called to serve as pastor of Grace Lutheran Church in Elmore. He guided the congregation through a reorganization of its council, two constitutional revisions, two building projects, and a major expansion of its ministries and outreach to the community. In addition to his pastoral duties at Grace, Rev. Nevergall served on several Synod Boards and Committees, most often in the areas of long-range planning and worship. He also served for eight years as the President (and one of the organizers) of a local non-profit corporation called Woodmore CAGE whose mission is to work with the local school district to provide private funding for and planning/construction of needed extra-curricular facilities that the district would not otherwise be able to afford. Additionally, Rev. Nevergall was involved in loclal and area-wide ecumenical efforts, chairing the local Ministerium for many years and serving as an organizing member of the area's Lutheran-Roman Catholic dialog.
It was during his college years at Ohio Northern University when he met his wife, Karen (they were married in 1980). She as a degree in Accounting and Marketing and is a Certified Public Accountant. They have two grown sons, Michael, who lives in Austin, Texas with his wife, Rachel, and daughter, Caroline, and John, who lives in Columbus, Ohio.
